We are delighted to reopen with A Glimpse of South Africa: A Celebration of the Rainbow Nation Through Photography and Fine Craft, on view from March 5 through June 14.

Through powerful photography and finely crafted works, this exhibit offers a window into South Africa’s diverse landscapes and cultures, celebrating the artistry, resilience, and everyday beauty that define the Rainbow Nation.

On view:

• Professional photography by Steven Lipofsky

• Ironwood carvings of South African wildlife

• Exquisite ceramics and fine pewter

• Intricate basketry and beadwork

• Handcrafted wood pieces

Drawn from the collection of the Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center and generously shared by private Monadnock collectors, these works — and the people connected to them — offer a meaningful glimpse into a country whose richness leaves a lasting impression.

Many people associate South Africa with the legacy of Nelson Mandela and the struggle against apartheid. While honoring that important history, this exhibit focuses on the everyday beauty, creativity, and cultural vitality that continue to shape the nation today.

Special Presentations:

March 14 at 4 PM — Robert Stephenson
Africa: North, South, East & West, Up & Down, In & Around 1972–1973

Rob Stephenson, long-time resident of Jaffrey and now at RiverMead in Peterborough, traveled through Africa in 1972-73, starting off in London and driving to Kenya; then to Ethiopia by train and bus, again driving Nairobi to Johannesburg; hitchhiking and train to Cape Town and finally by freighter up the west coast to Senegal. There were some challenges and adventures along the way. Could the same trip be taken today and in the same manner? Who knows?

His talk will be informal and illustrated with many slides. And if there’s time there might be an excursion up the Lofa River in Liberia searching for gold!

March 29 at 3 PM — Steve Lipofsky
The Colors of South Africa

Last year, photographer Steve Lipofsky spent a month traveling thousands of miles across South Africa — from Cape Town and Cape Point to Durban, Kruger National Park, and many places in between. Along the way, he encountered the country’s remarkable landscapes, extraordinary wildlife, and the warmth and humor of the people he met.

In this 45-minute presentation, Steve shares stories and photographs that explore the many “colors” of South Africa. Blending humor, personal experiences, and striking imagery, he hopes to offer a deeper understanding of a country that remains a mystery to many.

With sincere thanks to Steve Lipofsky and collectors Louise Crooks, Brent Meyers, and Phil Gargan
for their generosity and support in bringing this exhibit to our community.

We look forward to welcoming you.
