spacer Our Family Heirlooms: The Therese Lamarre Bourdon Community Showcase

The Community Showcase, funded by donors Clyde Kessel and Françoise Bourdon of Carlisle MA in honor of her mother Marie Therese, is a new feature this year at the Mariposa Museum. The case is intended to showcase family histories and the museum welcomes interested local residents to contact the Museum with ideas for their families' collections. A permanent archive of the community showcases is preserved here, starting with the display by Nadiya Petrova Weidman of her family's heirloom Ukrainian embroidery and other artifacts.

Amazon Rainforest Artifacts
A new exhibit of Amazon Rainforest Artifacts is being displayed in the Community Showcase at the Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center on Main Street in Peterborough. The collection has been loaned by local resident John Friede.

The collection of artifacts was gathered as part of John's work from 1990-1996 with Amanaka'a Amazon Network to advance funding proposals from the peoples of the forest. The organization worked with influential leaders to establish an embassy for indigenous peoples in New York City. The collection includes a Yanomami feather headress (made with Parrot Feathers) and combat weapons and a roof from an Amazon House.

The Mariposa Museum aims to provide the community opportunities to share their familiy's heritage in an atmosphere of respect and curiosity so that children will grow up with interest, not fear, in what is different and the world will know more peace.

Korean family heirlooms
A new exhibit of Korean family heirlooms is being displayed in the Community Showcase at the Mariposa Museum & World Culture Center on Main Street in Peterborough. The collection has been loaned by Helen and Peter Ballou and is dedicated to Helen's mother Hong Kyong-eh.

The exhibit includes her mother's colorful wedding dress and another contemporary Hangbok dress given to her on her last visit to her family's homeland. Also included in the display are a doll collection, a scene of a traditional wedding march, a cook pot, a wooden box with mother-of-pearl designs and more. The Museum hopes to plan an event for families about Korea during the time of the exhibit. Anyone who can contribute music, recipes, crafts, stories or the like is urged to contact us. Ms. Ballou will be asked to attend to answer any questions about her heirlooms and her Korean family heritage.

Ukrainian Exhibit : July-August 2004

Nadiya Petrovna Petrenko Weidman, with family heirlooms from the Ukraine
Antique & Contemporary Embroideries of the Ukraine make a lovely floral exhibit this spring in the Therese Lamarre Bourdon Community Showcase of the main gallery of the Museum. A visit to the collection is perfect for the Easter season as central to the display are three hand-waxed pysanky, the prized decorated eggs of the Ukraine. While the eggs are waxed and dyed only at Eastertime with ancient and symbolic patterns, they can be given anytime as gifts, hung in a corner of the house or barn to evict evil spirits, or be given to travellers for protection. Orthodox Easter usually falls two weeks after Western Easter.

Nadiya Petrovna Petrenko Weidman, site manager of the Museum living in Brookline NH at the Andres Institute of Art sculpture mountain, was born and raised in Pravna, south of Kiev in the Ukraine. She created the exhibit based on treasured family heirlooms such as the traditional dress hand-embroidered in black and red by her grandmother in the late 20th century. The dress is handsewn from homemade linen, and the colors symbolize love and sadness, and how they go hand in hand.

A woolen shawl is another part of family - and national - history. Her uncle brought it home from World War II when he served in a different region of the Ukraine and he gave it to Nadiya when she was a very young girl. Her mother embroidered the bedspread and pillowcases, which covered the plain everyday pillows and blanket for decoration only.

She also embroidered the wallhanging, typically hung around a photograph, religious image or icon, or window. The Kalina berry motif is related to folk customs. A high-bush cranberry, it's known for high Vitamin C content and used for teas to recover from winter ailments.

The most striking item displayed is a large wooden lute-shaped instrument with many, many strings. Blind minstrels used to wander village streets singing tales of history to the accompaniment of these strings. It is especially revered because a national hero, a freedom fighter in the 40's who was a poet, artist and musician, played the bandura. Nadiya played it herself in school, and she also sang in a traditional Ukrainian choir accompanied by the bandura.

When children are raised with respect and curiosity towards
other cultures, the world will know more peace and less war.
