Lesson Plans

Flowers

This activity was developed by 2nd grade teachers at Peterborough Elementary School and Mariposa Museum staff. It takes about an hour.

We begin in a circle on the main gallery floor. In the center of the circle are artifacts with flowers on them, in needlework, beadwork, painting, carving. We look at these together to notice the different media; the difference between very naturalistic and highly stylized flowers; the varied uses of the artifacts.

The children then receive a worksheet on a clipboard and a pencil. They explore the main gallery looking for objects with flowers on them. They answer these questions:
What is it?
What is it made of?
What is it used for?
and also sketch the object.

After 15 minutes or so, we come back together to share our discoveries.

The students can then choose one object (perhaps with a flower, perhaps not) that they really want to spend time with. The object is put in front of them (unless it's a kimono hanging high on the wall!) and they draw it on a clean sheet of paper. This is their time to focus on one artifact and really notice the details.

We share our drawings in the large group, and this ends the lesson.

If the group is large, or if you want an additional activity, we split the group in half and, while some are upstairs doing the worksheet and drawing, others are in our downstairs workshop doing an art activity related to the flower mandalas of Linda Wyman-Durman.

Essential Questions
What are the ways a flower (or another natural object) can be represented?
What materials can an artist use to make an artifact?
How are form and function related?
Skills
Close observation of an object for detail
Interpreting an object's function from its appearance
Sorting / searching by one attribute (finding flowers among hundreds of objects)
Articulating reasons for drawing / choosing one object: verbal description
Creating a symmetrical design

Lesson Plans

The Mariposa Museum offers programs on cultures from around the world and on themes that cross between cultures, such as childhood and celebrations. We offer programs for all grade levels K-12. Some are of course more suitable for primary grades, others for middle or high school students. We can adapt most topics to different age groups.

When children are raised with respect and curiosity towards
other cultures, the world will know more peace and less war.
