Introduction

The Mariposa Museum offers programs on cultures from around the world and on themes that cross between cultures, such as childhood and celebrations. We offer programs for all grade levels K-12. Some are of course more suitable for primary grades, others for middle or high school students. We can adapt most topics to different age groups.

As you read through the descriptions of individual programs, you will see that they address many state and local curriculum requirements, particularly in social studies. For instance, here are two of the state's K-12 Broad Goals for Social Studies Education integrated into all our units:
  • "Students will demonstrate an awareness of and concern for the ways that the world's people, resources, and environments are interrelated and interdependent."
  • "Students will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the geography of New Hampshire, the United States, and the world and understand the impact of geography on political, economic, and social developments."
Mariposa's lessons give you a hands-on, exciting way to meet the state's curriculum standards. Here are two examples of proficiency standards (from Curriculum Standard 18 in the history strand) that come to life for your students in our programs:
  • At the end of grade 6, "Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of the distinctive characteristics of major contemporary societies and cultures of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East."
  • At the end of grade 10, "Students will compare the origin, central ideas, institutions, and worldwide influence of major religious and philosophical traditions including Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism."
Our lessons use students' different intelligences: visual, artistic, musical, mechanical, logical, and imaginative. We use artifacts to tell stories and give students the opportunity to touch, wear, play and use the objects. As you read the descriptions of each unit, please be aware that our lessons are very flexible. We can adapt them to your group size and to the time you'd like to spend. We can handle up to three classes or 50 students at once (and, in special circumstances, more). Some groups spend one hour, others three hours with us. If you can stay longer, we offer time in the dress-up area; the opportunity to play our collection of instruments from around the world; snack or lunch in the museum itself or (weather permitting) in our Zen garden; storytelling; a craft activity in our workshop downstairs; or time in the museum gift shop.

Please contact us at 924-4555 or online at education@mariposamuseum.org to inquire about programs or to make a booking.

Admission charge is $5 per student, teachers and chaperones free. We have grant money to subsidize at least part of the schoolıs bus expense for the fieldtrip to the museum, if needed.

Below you will find detailed lessons that have been presented for a particular age group. Besides those listed, we have done lessons on Continents; First Peoples; Immigration; Sound; Japan; Food and Nutrition Around the World; Toys, Dolls, and Games Around the World; Latin America; the Pacific Rim; Festival of Lights; Day of the Dead Celebration; Butterflies; Chinese New Year; Schools Around the World; Animals in Different Cultures; Asian Kites; Oceania; Rituals Around Love Across Cultures; Matryoshka and the Russian Culture; and Communities Around the Globe.
