spacer Our Instrument Collection

Our collection is divided into several categories:
Aerophones | Chordophones | Idiophones | Idiophones continued | Membranophones

Chordophones

Chordophones are instruments that produce sound by vibrating strings. Strings can be plucked, strummed, struck or bowed. Some examples of these instruments are guitars, harps and violins.

Around the world, cultures have created many different types of chordophones. They were first played 5000 years ago in the Middle East. Stringed instruments are still very important in the classical, pop and folk music of today.

Berimbau
Berimbau

Origin - Africa & Brazil

The Berimbau originated from a hunters bow and a drinking gourd.

In Brazil the Berimbau accompanies Capoeira, a traditional martial art that is disguised as dance.

How to play it: Hold the curved stick in one hand and a small stick in the other hand. With the small stick you strike the string of the Berimbau. Depending on where you hit it, the sound will be high or low.
