MARIPOSA: A NEW LEADER FOR THE NEXT DECADE

The Mariposa brings the world to New England's doorstep by providing extraordinary programs and celebrations of world cultures. This is no classic museum, focused on conservation and preservation. Using art and everyday objects, folklore and mythology, traditions and stories, drawing heavily on the rich and diverse neighbors in New Hampshire and New England, the Mariposa celebrates the differences — and the common ground — between cultures.

For decades the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire has attracted a pool of unusual, deeply talented, broadly educated, even eclectic, people from across the country. Our rural small towns offer much to those of us who have chosen to live here. But direct exposure to cultures and peoples from all over the world has not been a strong point. We are among the whitest and the least ethnically diverse of regions of the nation. We have a huge regional stake in the success of the Mariposa to help link us and our children more deeply and richly to the larger world.

The Mariposa is at a critical juncture. Not quite ten years old since its launch in a 7,000 square foot former church in Peterborough by Linda and David Blair in 2002, the Mariposa has built an exceptional reputation, a loyal audience, and a broad base of support.

David Blair, Mariposa's founder, spiritual driver and principal financial supporter, now plans to step down.

With David's full and continuing support, we seek a new leader. The retirement of the influential founder is a critical and sensitive moment for a non-profit or business venture. The timing is right.

We begin the search for the new leader of the Mariposa from a strong base. The vision of the Mariposa, originally bounded by the imaginations of David and Linda Blair, is now firmly held in the region. In 2010 the Mariposa drew over 7000 visitors and offered over 100 lectures and performances. In the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years alone it hosted 4,000 school children!

The New Leader: What We Seek

We seek an experienced leader with the vision and the skills to secure the Mariposa's place in the bedrock of New Hampshire; a leader and a manager with the skills and ambition to take the Mariposa forward.

We are looking for a trip leader rather than a curator. Someone who will build on the superb base, who will tap into the community's appreciation of what understanding world cultures can mean, who will mobilize this community's exceptional talents, resources and traditions and who, with the staff and board, will expand the Mariposa's reach and influence.

The Monadnock Region is distinctive. It is rare in its capacity to produce exceptional one-of-a-kind non-profits … none happened purely by chance. In each case there was a coming together of natural conditions and local culture. They arose from the combination of a quirky, engaged, well-educated, intellectually curious, self-reliant population and an unusual, persistent, creative visionary, driven by a vision and the personal financial capacity to underwrite the launch.

To cite just a few, we are blessed by the Harris Center, created by Eleanor Briggs (1973); Stonewall Farm, created by Mike Kidder (1987); Monadnock Music, created by Jim Bolle (1972); Historic Harrisville created by David Putnam (1971); and the MacDowell Colony, created by Marion MacDowell (1932). Or, to reach back more than a century, the Monadnock Lyceum created in the 1840s.

Each of these is a gem, a regional or even national class institution, launched and initially supported by a single individual, now broadly based and embedded in the Monadnock community, the state of New Hampshire and in New England. Together they and others make our region rich, varied and endowed way beyond what any small community of 75,000 or so people has a right to expect as the norm.

We believe that the Mariposa has the potential to achieve this distinction.

It is not there yet. But then, if you looked at any of these other institutions at this same point of their existence you would have had to have been incredibly far sighted to have imagined that they would have grown and matured to the position they now occupy.

There is no one formula for how to do this, no single way.

The Mariposa's new leader will certainly be someone who catches the fire of the Mariposa's vision and mission and has the capacity and call to extend its relevance and presence.

Likely someone with multicultural experience in the US or abroad.

Someone experienced in introducing people to something new and capable of creating the framework in which to engage and transport them.

Someone with an infectious ability to build rapport and effective partnerships with the community, staff and board.

Someone able to marshal leadership, attract financial support and recruit from among the extraordinary talent within the deep Monadnock pool and from away.

We want to talk to a wide range of people — from seasoned professionals working in closely allied fields, to younger talented individuals whose raw talent, energy and promise may offset less experience, and to more mature persons, perhaps retired or newly moved to the Monadnock area or working only part time who might be inspired by this opportunity to return to work or shift from their current work. Many — most — will not be looking for a new job. We believe this opportunity is so unusual, for all the reasons noted above, that for the right people it will challenge and call to them.
