From the Director

ConVal High Students in Lisa Cochran's World Mythology Class chose as a final project creating a visual of each myth using four art criteria they established. The resulting mural, the summary of a semester's study of myths of the afterlife, is a 4ft. X 9ft. mural which is hanging with honor in the Mariposa library from Nov. 1-15.

10:15 Sunday October 16th "right here in River City" - at the Peterborough Unitarian Church at 25 Main Street: the Drepung Gomang monkswho taught at the museum last weekend will participate in an Interfaith Service including a dharma talk by the gyeshe (teacher) leading the tour, who was one of the monks to leave Tibet just after the Dalai Lama's dramatic escape in the fifties. 10:15-11:45. Go to it and then compare Rahel's Hebrew songs and chants in honor of the 4 October Jewish High Holy Days at the Mariposa at 2pm for a truly interfaith day of celebration of the spiritual in all of us.

The Drepung Gomang Monks are in Nashua this week, with the opening ceremony for beginning their Sand Mandala at Rivier Colleger (603-888-1311) in the Mandala Memorial Arts Studio. Activities, including slide show and sale of handmade crafts and overtone chanting, continue through Sunday October 16th, 9pm. Go to gomangtour.org.

Our rainy Columbus Day weekend turned into a great time for grandparents and grandchildren to explore the museum together. Children from 18 months up lured their elders into hands-on play and spent an average of two happy hours engaged in fun together, from dress-up to family puzzles to instruments to Finding Nemo in saltwater aquarium. Consider a Grandparents Membership as a Christmas Gift - unlimited admissions for Grandparents and up to four grandchildren throughout the year!!!

Parents have asked if the museum is toddler-friendly. Absolutely! Once you steer them past the entranceway with the temptations of the museum store, everything in the museum is touchable with reasonable care. We have a special toddler's section and scores of books and musical CD's in our resource room, family floor puzzles, both international and fantasy dress-up (including knight's costumes for boys and girls - remember Joan of Arc). So, as the weather turns colder, remember we are a warm and child-friendly place designed for all ages, and including handicap-accessible elevator and bathrooms. But we don't sell instant cameras - please bring your own (picture phone works, too).

"Yankee Magazine," our Dublin neighbor, has come out with a winner: "The Old Farmer's Almanac for Kids: Wacky Facts and Fun Activities plus Lots of Super-Cool Stuff." Sold the first one (good price at $9.95 for 185 pages) within an hour of stocking the shelf. Good gift, I'm looking forward to reading it with my grandson, 5, but I think any elementary aged student and quite a few adults will enjoy it. There's also a companion website with complementary activities and a downloadable teacher/parent guide. Compliments to Yankee! PS. This issue will be for sale for two years. PS. Jeff Kaley of Asian World Imports has done an extraordinary job of helping us stock the museum for field tour budgets, birthday party presents, and stocking stuffers. From 75 cents to $3, we have some two dozen affordable items made in "Fair Trade PeaceCrafts" providing good, safe jobs and living wages for craftsmen in need.

Sincerely,
Linda Marsella
