Mark your calendars for Aug. 5-19, this year's "Art in August" fundraiser to benefit educational programs at Mariposa Museum of World Cultures in Peterborough. The annual juried silent auction features portraits, landscapes, mixed media, photography, antiques, fine crafts and artwear. Artists set the beginning bid and choose to receive up to 60% of the final selling price.

The auction is a unique opportunity to see in one place over 100 pieces by Monadnock Area artists as well as works from some of the international artists represented in the museum's permanent collection, including Segun Olorunfemi of Nigeria. flutemaker Jimmy Thunderheart of Surry, and international documentary photograhper Don Gurewitz. Everyone interested in participating is urged to contact Felice Fullam, associate director, at 924-4555 as soon as possible, as the deadline fast approaches for posting artworks on the website.

Silent Bidding commences at the artist reception at the museum at 26 Main Street on First Friday, August 5, from 6-9pm. Meet the artists over a glass of wine and enjoy the enchanting classical guitar played by musician Logan Gabriel (from 7:30 on).

Bidding continues all week during regular museum hours, 12-5 weekdays, 10-4 Saturday, 12-4 Sunday. The concluding event on Friday, April 19, is a fashion show of Art to Wear lent by local merchants and a "mini" live auction of selected pieces. International desserts will be served and admission to the show at Unitarian Church at 7pm is by advance ticket, not yet on sale.

Last year's auction brought many sales and extra commissions to participants. Portraitist Laura Woerner, for example, painted three extra portraits for a family besides the one which they won at "Art in August." With the participation of Laura Woerner, Shirley Pullido Numael Pullido, and portrait photographer Joe Shamy, commissioned portraits of your choice will again be a strong feature of this auction. For more information, please contact Felice for instructions for submitting entries. Than save the dates for a mini-tour under one roof of te finest in local artistry and craftsmanship.

Sincerely,
Linda Marsella
