December 13, 2006 From the Director This summer the Mariposa Museum celebrated its fourth anniversary! We have accomplished a lot in four years, and we look forward to the challenge of meeting our mission of peace through education in a changing world. Please make a donation today to help us create a generation of engaged world citizens. "If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other," said Mother Teresa. All our programs at Mariposa emphasize the similarities we share with our world family, while acknowledging the differences that make us unique. Our hope is to instill in children respect and curiosity for all cultures and to show them that they can make a difference. For this school year we have created a wide-ranging multicultural curriculum using our interactive, hands-on methods. Because it is challenging for teachers to justify and pay for field trips, we have refined our programs to meet state requirements not only in social studies but also in language arts, science, math, history and art. To relieve transportation expenses we have received a busing grant available to schools in the Monadnock Region. We are offering new programs, some designed for middle and high schools, for instance "Civil Rights One by One" during African History Month, and "Islamic Cultures in Transition" at the time of the Muslim New Year. Our rich collection provides a nucleus for stimulating programs for all ages. We are introducing thought-provoking and timely programs for older adults and are developing explanatory materials to make our collection more accessible to all visitors. Every week we offer a multicultural Sunday event, often for families. On First Fridays Mariposa is open late, admission free, with a monthly art gallery opening, a KidCraft and musical offering. The gallery exhibits open our eyes yet again to the beauty and diversity in other cultures. The thread of universal kinship was exemplified by our summer exhibit, "Roshan: Light and Promise": photographs taken by young Afghan women and their peers in the US, sponsored by the U. N. Committee of New Canaan, Connecticut. More and more visitors of all ages, and especially families, are finding Mariposa an exciting place to spend hours exploring the collection and enjoying hands-on activities such as dress-up and musical instruments. Your gifts, large and small, help us to open the eyes and hearts of children and adults to the wonders of our human family. Please give as generously as you can. A donation of $100 underwrites the cost of a class of 20 children coming to Mariposa to experience the world! We appreciate your help of any kind. Volunteers are always appreciated.
