Cambodian Folk Dance | Tango

The Mariposa Museum offers lessons and exhibits of various forms of cultural dance, as well as information on many historic and colorful dance forms.

FLAMENCO DANCING

Classes start September 17, 2005
It's Time to Learn Flamenco!

Inés Arrubla
The starting date for flamenco is postponed one week. Come to either introductory lesson Sept. 17 or 24 for $18 and then decide whether to commit to the six-week course. Mixed ages, men and women, fifth grade through senior citizens welcome! Wear shoes with a hard sole (no sneakers!) to make a tapping sound!

Flamenco is not tango, which is a partner dance from Argentina. Men and women do flamenco solos. It is the gypsy dance from Spain and one in which age is no obstacle to dancing with grace and most important, spirit or "duende." And it's fun!"

Inés Arrubla from Spain is an excellent instructor for all ages, has choreographed various pieces and is artistic director of one troup as well as managing director of "Las Chicas," an informal performing troup of her students and other aficionados. Inés and Las Chicas were the featured performers for the museum's third anniversary on July 1 thanks to a grant from Monadnock Community Bank.

Lessons meet 10-11:30am on Saturday and are designed for mixed ages, 5th grade through adult, male and female. Lessons will cost $18 each. After the first two lessons, dancers will be asked to commit to the remaining six sessions at $100 total. Call 924-4555 to register.

About what to wear for class: women should wear character shoes or comfortable street shoes with a small heel. Males should wear normal leather shoes or boots. NO barefoot, NO sneakers, since we need shoes that can make sound. NO loose shoes, and of course, no shoes that can damage the floor.

This dance of pattern and grace is suitable for all ages! Senior citizens welcome.

CAMBODIAN FOLK DANCE

Monkey Dancers
Samnang Hor, a Cambodian-American freshman at U-Mass Amherst, offers Cambodian folk dance lessons to Monadnock youth on Saturdays between 10am and 2pm at the Museum. Hor, whose specialty is the Monkey Dance incorporating daredevil breakdancing, is a star with the professional Angkor Dance Troupe of Lowell, which has performed in Peterborough seven years in celebration of the April 15 Cambodian New Year.

Classes are coming to a close, but will begin again in the fall.

When children are raised with respect and curiosity towards
other cultures, the world will know more peace and less war.
