  • The thumb piano or bira, sanza, ralimba was used by the people of Niger, Nigeria, and Ghana.

  • The artifact was found by Portuguese explorers in 1586. The object was most likely used in festivals or ceremonies also known as rituals. 

  • Its purpose was to entertain, help in performing rituals, and also inform buffalo of their presence.
