Ndebele Tribe

written by: Briah

The picture shown here is a doll, she is supposed to resemble someone from The Ndebele Tribe. They are a group of people who live in South Africa . A necklace commonly worn by these people, called izixolwanas, are generally some what heavy and very hard, they are fitted around the neck, and more are added over time. Their purpose is to slowly stretch the neck out so that it is long and high. And these necklaces are considered beautiful.

The Ndebele are known for their lovely beadwork. When it is time for a woman to be married, she will wear a beaded apron called a jocolo. Afterwards, she wears another beaded apron called a liphotu. After she has her first baby, she receives one more called a mapoto.

Woman paint their families homes, using bright colors (such as red, purple, and green), which they also use on their clothes. These colors all have meanings. That might be why it is important to people of the Ndebele tribe to use them in their art.
They are mostly
very interesting and creative people
. And it's great that they are able to create such amazing art!
