Ashanti Akuaba Doll

By Andrew Norton

  • This object is called an Akuaba doll, also known as a fertility doll. The Ashanti people were the ones who had first made the Akuaba doll.  The Ashanti live mainly in the central part of Ghana. They are known for their love and skill of arts and crafts. They believe in many supernatural and spiritual powers, and therefore have much faith in the doll.

  •    The Akuaba doll is given to pregnant woman so that they will give birth to a healthy and beautiful baby.  The style of doll depended on whether they wanted a boy or girl. After the baby is born, the doll is passed down to the baby so it would remain a healthy child. The doll was supposed to teach parents how to raise a healthy child. A child has to be born healthy to survive the diseases and other conditions of Ghana.

  • The doll teaches us that the Ashanti people value the traits of health and beauty. The doll shows why the Ashanti people are known for their love of arts and crafts. The Ashanti people show how important it is was to have a baby by how much detail they put into the doll.
