The Kanga Cloth

By: Rowan

The ethnic group that The Kanga Clothcreated this artifact is called the Zanzibar people. This people was part of the republic called Tanzania. Some of the greatest sayings came from the kanga cloth. Things like, "Better late than never" were written on kanga cloths, just in different ways. "Wema hauozi" means "Kindness is never wasted," and "kawia ufike" means "Better late than never."

The Zanzibar people used this artwork as clothing. They had hundreds of different ways to wear it. They used it as a headdress, as a skirt, as a top, and a dress. They would often wear two at once, using one as the undergarment, and the other to go on top and form the main design. This artwork reflects the beliefs, values, and ideas of its creators by showing us that long ago what people wore may have been different in some parts, but is still the same in others. It also shows us that the Zanzibar people were quick to learn about substances that were more comfortable, and were a very creative, color loving civilization.

Today the Kanga Cloth is still worn and loved by many people in Africa, and other countries too.
