The Kanga Cloth

By: Olivia Thomas

  • The Zanzibar people use the Kanga cloth in many different ways. They are used as a piece of clothing for men and women, a thing to carry objects in, and a gift. Women also carry around children on their backs in a Kanga cloth. Men would give Kanga cloths to their wives for a gift too. People have to be cautious about which Kanga cloth they wear to an occasion, for some people might take offense to the proverb written on it.

  • Some examples of the proverbs on the kanga cloth's are “Do not blame others for the proverbs you have caused yourself”, “I fear the lions for its jaws, I do not fear man for his words”, and others like that.
