BorderThe Shuka: African Clothing

Webpage by Emma Rogers

Introduction
The Shuka is an African article of clothing. It is a dress-like cloth, traditionally worn wrapped around the body, and over each shoulder. It isn’t specially patterned to fit like this, but is simply a very large square cloth. They are almost always red, and usually have a plaid or striped pattern on them. The patterns are blue, black and purple.

  • Shukas are worn by male warriors of pretty much all ages of a native African group called the Maasai. Most Shukas are red, and red stands for “warrior/blood/bravery”.

  • A Shuka seems like a very appropriate article of clothing for a tribe such as the Maasai because it represents their values through color,A Shuka Cloth is a signature of their group, and is very well fitting for their climate.

What We Can Learn About the Massai
The Shuka tells us that the Maasai tribe likes to wear clothes that are simple, yet eye-catching with the bright color red. There isn’t any extravagant embroidery or anything, but there is significance in the cloth, which has been around so long it has become a signature of the tribe. Although the Shuka is not a big, fancy outfit for ceremonial or celebratory purposes, it is important because it is what the men wear every day when they are out doing their work.
