Akuaba-Doll
By: Chad
  • The object I studied is called an Akuaba-Doll, also known as a fertility doll. These dolls are made of wood and are carved and decorated. These dolls are usually black or brown in color. Sometimes, some might have an object on the forehead like an animal. Akuaba-Dolls have round and large heads.
  • The groups of people who created and used the Akuaba-Doll are called the Ashanti people, who livePhoto of Akuaba-Doll in central Ghana. They believe in numerous spiritual and supernatural powers. Ashanti people are famous for making arts and crafts. Ashanti people created Akuaba-Dolls to give to a tribal woman who is wanting to become pregnant. After the woman has a child, the doll is passed down to the child.
  • The purpose of the Akuaba-Doll is to help tribal women have beautiful, healthy babies. The Akuaba-Doll is supposed to teach how to take care of a child. Also, the doll gives good luck.
  • This doll teaches us that Ashanti people believe in health and beauty and think having children is highly desirable. This shows that they value children, health, and beauty. Also, that they like making arts and crafts.
